The 100 members of CUPE Local 2620 are on strike against the Regional Municipality of Halton (which comprises Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills to the west and southwest of Toronto). The strike began on Thursday, April 9 after the members rejected a tentative settlement reached the day before.
The Environmental Services workers operate and maintain the water purification and wastewater treatment plants throughout the Region of Halton.
The major outstanding issue in the dispute is wages. Like many CUPE members in Ontario, Local 2620 members have not had a wage increase in six years. They point to an April, 97 settlement with Halton Regional Police which included wage increases of 2% in 1996, 2.5% in 1997 and 2.5% in 1998.
