Laval, Tuesday, August 14, 2001 - Discussions between the City of Laval and its outside workers to renew the collective agreement are continuing in a positive way, said Martin Gagnon, President of the outside workers union (CUPE Local 4545). The union representative points out that exchanges with the municipal administration have been especially intense for the past few weeks. For the municipality and for the workers, we hope to sign an agreement very quickly, he added.

On the one hand, the outside workers union wishes to dissociate itself completely from the rumors circulating in Laval, claiming that acts of vandalism were committed against city equipment. The unions officers deplore the fact that such rumors have sullied the well-entrenched bargaining process that is continuing normally.

CUPE represents about 70% of all municipal employees in Quebec. With some 100,000 members in 11 sectors of activity, CUPE is the largest union affiliate of the QFL.
