The Yachajs from the Sierra and the Amazonian regions opened the third Congress of Indigenous Nationalities and Peoples of El Ecuador (CONAIE) on Jan. 10 in Santa Domingo, Ecuador.

About 1,500 delegates and guests shared views on several issues, including natural resources, agrarian development, and the South American country’s constitution as perceived by indigenous peoples.

CUPE contributed to the congress as part of a Canadian Labour Congress request for funding to assist CONAIE congress delegates who discussed the above issues, heard proposals and recognized the rich diversity of indigenous cultures. Other contributions came from CLC, CUPW and PSAC.

CONAIE has wide experience working with Ecuadoran unions and the Hemispheric Social Alliance.
