HUMBOLDT (Sask): Humboldt municipal workers, donning union t-shirts, will protest stalled contract talks with a silent sit-in at tomorrow evenings city council meeting.

The city council meeting will start at 7:30 p.m.

Talks between the city and CUPE Local 2359, which represents the 52 municipal workers, broke off on July 29. At that time, the city’s negotiating committee declined to set new bargaining dates after the union suggested they go back to city council to review their mandate.

The union wants a new contract to deal with a number of outstanding reclassifications and include a top-up for members receiving Worker’s Compensation Board payments.

But Terry Schlitz, president of CUPE Local 2359, says the citys negotiating team is refusing to address the union’s key bargaining priorities, so they are taking their concerns to city council.

The union’s last contract expired on December 31, 2001.
