HEU has also blown the whistle on some questionable contracting-out at a Chilliwack nursing home. The Fraser Health Authority is investigating the contracting-out of laundry, housekeeping and dietary work to a company run by the owner’s brother. The company has no health care experience. The facility owner a former Social Credit health minister displayed a spectacular lack of understanding about the role of health support services in quality care. John Jansen told the media it’s [only] housekeeping and kitchen staff, nothing to do really with health care.

HEU is also connecting the dots on a contracting-out scheme to truck more than four million pounds of hospital laundry to Alberta. The 10-year contract has gone to K-Bro Linen Systems, the company that sparked the Calgary laundry workers’ strike in 1995. The company, which is controlled by a private US investment firm, will take 43 skilled laundry jobs and $1.5 million in direct economic activity out of the communities of Chilliwack and Mission.
