Courses open to union members, their families and friends free of charge

THANKS TO A NEW PARTNERSHIP with the Burnaby School District, HEU will be offering Grade 10 and 12 Equivalency (G.E.D.) classes and career planning courses for all interested members early in the new year.

The high school equivalency program gives displaced members an opportunity to upgrade their educational qualifications, while the career planning classes will focus on employment opportunities in health care and how to create a personal career plan.

“We know our members have a wealth of skills and experience that should not be lost to the health care system,” says HEU secretary-business manager Chris Allnutt. “Our aim is to create a supportive learning environment where laid-off members can get the additional training and credentials they may need to continue their careers in the health care field.”

The nine-week courses, beginning January 26, 2004, are free of charge and will be held at HEU's Provincial Office - 5000 North Fraser Way. Everyone who wishes to enroll must attend an information session on either January 19 or 21 at 9 am. To register for the information sessions, call the HEU Action Centre at 604-456-7137.
