REGINA - Three unions representing 25,000 health care workers will hold a joint news conference in Regina today at 1:30 p.m.

Event: Joint news conference of health care unions
Occasion: The resumption of contract talks with SAHO
When: January 3, 2006 at 1:30 p.m.
Where: Regina CUPE office, 3731 East Eastgate Drive
Participants: Representatives of CUPE, SEIU and SGEU

The Canadian Union of Public Employees, the Service Employees International Union and the Saskatchewan Government and General Employees Union are holding the news conference just prior to the resumption of contract talks with the Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations on January 4.

The three unions represent workers in the health care providers group across the province, which includes special care aides, medical technicians, laboratory technologists, licensed practical nurses, clerical, laundry and maintenance staff, dietary aides and housekeepers.

All three unions reached tentative agreements with SAHO on the non-monetary items in early December, after more than 15 months of contract negotiations. They moved to a common bargaining table with SAHO on December 12, but failed to achieve a settlement before Christmas.

Although the three unions are in a legal strike position, they announced on December 17 that they would not allow their contract dispute with SAHO to disrupt health services through the festive season.
