(New Glasgow) – Employees of Highland Community Residential Services (HCRS) have ratified a new contract with the agency and averted a strike.

The deal was ratified on Saturday, October 21, by a strong majority of the members of CUPE Local 2330.

Local 2330 President Betty Jean Sutherland says, “While we didn’t get everything we wanted, we were pleased with the overall outcome.”

We also managed to shine some light on the issue of working hours for no pay. This practice must stop and it will be our number one priority next time around, where we plan to tackle it at a provincial level,” says Sutherland.

It’s time Community Services stepped up to the plate and fixed the problem across the sector for all employees working overnights where this practice exists,” she says.
