HAMILTON, Ont. – Eight security guards at the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board, members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) local 4977, are still being denied benefits from their employer.
Both parties have been in negotiations this week and are now at a dead end over the issue of benefits.
“It is the only remaining issue on the table and a significant one for our members”, said Steve Leavitt, CUPE representative. “These employees are not being treated with the same respect or equity as other Board employees. I don’t think the Board respects its core commitment.”
Part of the School Board’s main commitment on respect goes as follows: “We acknowledge diversity, dignity and worth of all individuals and respect their roles, competencies and contribution to our mission.”
For Leavitt, respect is what these members are looking for in this round of bargaining. “Some of these workers are making just over the poverty line and the Board says it cannot offer any benefits. It is simply appalling, when we know that Hamilton Wentworth District School Board has recently received more money from the Government to make sure support staff get decent working conditions. Our people are only hoping to get the same treatment as other employees across the Board.”
