Its not just huge US corporations like Enron that have governance problems. CUPE members at small social service agencies have encountered dysfunctional or absentee boards of directors on many occasions. And its our members who pay the price through strikes, layoffs, increased workloads or all of the above.

CUPE Research has written a guide to navigating the world of non-profit governance. The paper examines problems, tells CUPE members what their rights are, and recommends ways to challenge and change poor governance practice in the non-profit sector.

Topics include signs of a board in trouble, signs of a healthy board, board responsibilities (both legal and individual), ways to strengthen governance, and models of board governance.
