Red Deer CUPE Local 1445 members at Red Deer College have negotiated a ground breaking new contract clause for a day off with pay for members to support the parents of their new grandchild. As well, the agreement provides a 7% wage increase plus a cost of living increase if inflation exceeds 4% in 2001 and 3% in 2002.

Our success in negotiating a grandparent clause simply recognizes the changing demographics in our workplace, said Clark Daniels, President of CUPE Local 1445.

This round of bargaining also marked another first: CUPE 1445 and the Red Deer College Support Staff Association joined forces to bargain monetary changes with the College. Bargaining jointly on monetary items just made a lot of sense to our members, said Daniels. Working together we were able to achieve the best possible contract for both groups of employees.

CUPE Local 1445 represents over 100 clerical employees at the College. The new contract runs from July 1, 2001 to June 30, 2003.
