Today – Earth Day 2010 – marks the official launch of Canada’s newest labour/environmental/social justice collaboration: the Green Economy Network (GEN). The formation of GEN results from the efforts of many from different sectors of civil society who have identified a need in Canada to help push our society and economy in a greener, more sustainable and equitable direction. CUPE has been closely involved in the formation of GEN and will contribute to its development in many ways.

One of CUPE’s mandates is to foster good green job growth that will help sustain our planet and improve Canada’s record on climate change and other environmental issues. GEN will be a tool to do this. For example, via its research initiatives, GEN will show where the strongest areas of green job growth potential are in Canada. This information will then facilitate real green job growth in Canadian communities.
