VANCOUVER—The provincial election starts early for some Vancouverites. Premier Gordon Campbell has scheduled October 29 by-elections in Vancouver-Fairview and Vancouver-Burrard.

Falling between the October 14 federal and the upcoming November 15 B.C. community elections, Campbell may be hoping British Columbians will be focused elsewhere on October 29. But NDP candidates Jenn McGinn (Fairview) and Spencer Herbert (Burrard) are gearing up for high-profile campaigns.

To get things rolling, McGinn and Herbert held official launch parties on October 15 in their respective campaign offices. MLAs and special guests including NDP Leader Carol James were on hand to meet the candidates and their teams.

The candidates are now looking for volunteers, lawn sign locations, and donations. They’re also looking for volunteer sign crews, phone and foot canvassers, office workers and scrutineers. They stress that even a few hours a week can make a big difference.
