In response to pressure from residents of Georgetown, Ontario Health Minister George Smitherman has promised that the obstetrics and pediatrics unit in the town’s hospital will stay open.

CUPE Ontario helped the southwest Ontario community organize a spirited rally at Queen’s Park recently to defend the hospital.

The hospital is part of the William Osler Health Centre, which has locations in Brampton and Etobicoke. The centre has planned a new P3 hospital for its Brampton location. Many feel the expensive new facility will come at the expense of other Osler facilities.

Workers at the Georgetown hospital are members of CUPE Local 145.
The private consortium building the Brampton hospital Healthcare Infrastructure Company of Canada asked in May for an additional $22 million dollars before it would start construction, according to minutes of the William Osler Health Centre board meeting.
