Notre-Dame de Lourdes, Wednesday, September 18, 2002 – Outside and inside workers had cause to celebrate in Notre-Dame de Lourdes yesterday evening as they signed their first collective agreement. After 11 bargaining sessions, the employees of the municipality, members of CUPE local 4411, obtained their first labour agreement. This agreement confirms CUPE’s substantial presence in the Lanaudir0065’s municipalities.

“It’s an important moment for the employees of Notre-Dame de Lourdes,” said Serge Leboeuf, National Rep., “with this agreement, they’ve made important gains in job security and work schedules as well as an impressive catch-up wage increase.

As a matter of fact, all our bargaining objectives have been realized: excellent news for our members.” For example, in regard to work schedules, from now on, town employees will have fixed hours from Monday to Friday and measures have been introduced in regard to overtime.

The president of Local 4411, Denise Desmarais, didn’t try to hide her joy. “We are very satisfied with this first agreement. Our members are very happy. Bargaining took place in a respectful atmosphere; discussions were open and at the end of the process, everyone was pleased.”

CUPE represents approximately 70% of all municipal employees in Qub0065c. In addition to the municipalities, CUPE is active in 10 other sectors of activity in Qub0065c, including health and social services, education, urban and air transport, hydroelectricity, government corporations and public agencies in Qub0065c, and communications. With close to 100,000 members in Qub0065c, it is the largest FTQ affiliate.
