VICTORIA Township of Esquimalt municipal workers reached a tentative agreement last Thursday after voting 88 per cent in favour of a strike.

We had a strong show of solidarity from our members through our strike vote, Local 333 president Wayne Weber said. That was a major factor in pushing for a fair collective agreement for township workers.

The agreement parallels those of city workers in Victoria and the Greater Victoria Region achieved early this year, Weber said.

CUPE members will vote on the agreement next week. The previous agreement expired Dec. 31, 2000.

The 150 employees represented work at City Hall, parks and public works, Esquimalt Recreation Centre, Archie Browning Sports Centre and the municipal archives.
