PUGWASH, NS – Employees of Sunset Services, a Residential Care Facility (RCF) in Pugwash, will be taking a strike vote on October 5, after failing to reach a negotiated settlement with their employer this week.

The 100 members of CUPE Local 972 run a vocational program for mentally challenged people. They are Residential Care Workers and Vocational Counsellors at the facility.

CUPE National Representative Carl Crouse says, “The major outstanding issue is the employer’s position that a higher shift and weekend premium negotiated as part of a provincial settlement was not applicable to casuals.

Problem is, casuals are covered by the contract and already receive the current shift premium, so this makes no sense,” says Crouse.
