(Sydney) Workers at New Dawn Guest Home have voted 100% in favour of strike action to back their contract demands.

Talks have broken off between Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 3067 and New Dawn Guest Home, says Kathy MacLeod, National Representative with CUPE. The employees are personal care workers, housekeeping staff and dietary workers.

MacLeod says the home is looking for concessions at the bargaining table, but employees have made it clear they are not prepared to give up the few benefits they do have.

The union says outstanding issues include: medical plan; shift differential; and the CUPE provincial nursing home package including a pension plan.

Says MacLeod, The wages for the employees of New Dawn Guest Home fall far below the wages negotiated by CUPE and other unions across the province during the last round of bargaining.

The strike vote was held last evening.
