OSHAWA, Ont. – Durham Region long term care workers and their supporters will participate in a “Fairness – not a lot to ask for” rally at 3:30 pm, Monday, March 16, to urge Durham Region’s council and management to negotiate a fair contract, in line with the region’s offer to other municipal workers. Fred Hahn, CUPE Ontario Secretary Treasurer will be speaking at the rally.
The over 1,000 municipal homes workers, represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), have been without a contract for almost a year. Durham Region’s management and council are demanding the workers to accept an inferior deal that will create a two tier system in the Durham Region.
“We will not be treated as second-class citizens,” said Jan Tutton, president of CUPE 132. “We work for the same employer taking care of seniors in municipal homes and we deserve the same treatment and consideration as other municipal workers.”

The workers provide housekeeping, laundry, dietary, cooking, facility maintenance, personal support, administration and nursing services to residents living in Hillsdale Terraces, Hillsdale Estates, Fairview Lodge and Lakeview Manor.
“We value the work and care we provide for the elderly and retired,” said Tutton. “It’s time for this employer to show respect for long term care residents and their workers by offering a fair deal to our members.”
