Kawartha Ontario school board worker Don Postar of CUPE 5555 is the recipient of the sixth national health and safety award. Postar, the unanimous choice of the national committee, said he shared the honour with the other seven nominees because it’s team work that succeeds.

“I believe we have a team across Canada that is going to go forward,” he said. “We have our work cut out for us.”

Postar got a standing ovation as he made his way to the podium. Once there, he removed his jacket and pulled on a Manitoba Moose t-shirt to get “comfortable,” to the delight of the delegates.

“Health and safety has to be put back on the front burner,” he said, because it is a human right.

“My family needs me to come back home every night, and yours need you, the way you went to work.”
