CUPE is in mourning. We are deeply saddened to learn that Johanne

Saint-Amour has died of the cancer that she fought courageously for seven long years. CUPE has lost an assistant director and a committed activist, and her 16-year-old son has lost a caring, loving mother.

After earning a university degree in literature in the mid-1970s, Johanne went to work for the Red Cross, where she co-ordinated an educational service before becoming president of Local 2375. Under her leadership, the Red Cross staff organized to obtain their first collective agreement. But the organizing drive turned into a confrontation with the employer. Johanne found herself at the centre of an epic dispute marked by a months-long lockout in 1978 before the employees most of them women won a first contract.

Subsequently, in 1979, she became an instructor with the CTM (Conseil du travail de Montra006c, or the Montra006c Labour Council) and CUPE. The same year, she became actively involved in the status of women committee of the Qub0065c Council (later SCFP-Qub0065c). Her commitment to the cause of women remained unflagging in the years that followed.

In September 1981, she became a union staff representative and took on responsibility for CUPE’s Education Department, where she stayed for more than twenty years. Those who knew and worked with her over the years are unanimous in recognizing the quality and effectiveness of her work. Needless to say, as the head of the Education Department, she worked with hundreds and even thousands of activists from all sectors, as well as from other unions.

Last September, at the age of 51, she became assistant director of CUPE for all of Qub0065c.
