January 14, 2000, Delta, B.C. Members of CUPE Local 1091 are taking a strike vote for a second time. The vote is scheduled for Tuesday, January 18th and Colin Pawson, President of the local is confident the members will again vote to strike.

CUPE Local 1091 represents support staff in Deltas elementary and secondary schools.

The previous vote, held on November 1, passed by 80% and Pawson says he expects at least that majority again. Our members are frustrated with the employers failure to negotiate an agreement on key issues like job security, workload and benefits. I anticipate a strong strike mandate, he said.

Pawson also indicated that 72 hour strike notice will be served immediately after the strike results are known. CUPE members in Delta schools would be in a position to strike as early as Saturday, January 22. However Pawson would not say if a strike would start then.

If CUPE Local 1091 members go on strike, they will join CUPE locals in schools in Burnaby and Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows who are set to strike on January 20, 2000. Cowichan school support workers are also taking a strike vote.
