CUPE is part of a campaign to press Canadas broadcasting regulator to prevent a Calgary company from buying up six Qub0065c radio stations owned by Radiomd0069a.

The union, which represents workers at two of the stations, fears the would-be owners, Corus Entertainment, will eliminate Radiomd0069as news network and reduce regional programming.

The Radiomd0069a network provides news and information to 50 private radio stations across Qub0065c.

Coruss plan would also turn Radiomd0069as flagship station, Montra006cs CKAC, into an all?sports channel.

CUPE Local 2829 represents workers at CKAC. President Jules Bordeleau says the Corus plan would be a death sentence for Radiomd0069a.

It goes against the public interest in that it eliminates a distinct and autonomous source of information in Qub0065c, he said.

The local is asking Corus to withdraw its proposal and begin discussions with the unions as soon as possible.

The union is also working with producers, on-air personalities and others to come up with an alternative plan to relaunch French language AM radio in Qub0065c to serve the public interest, Bordeleau said.

The public campaign to save Radiomd0069a has collected more than 3,000 protest messages in its week of existence.
