CUPE members from across Newfoundland and Labrador will gather in Gander early next week for their 38th annual convention, which runs from April 29 until May 2, 2012.
 
President Wayne Lucas says delegates will debate a variety of resolutions ranging from:
 
• CETA, the Comprehensive and economic trade agreement between Canada and the EU

• A public early childhood education and care system for the province

• Fighting Stephen Harper’s plan to cut retirement security (Old Age Security)

• A proposed tax on food
 
Says Lucas, “We will also hear from a number of guest speakers, starting with Provincial NDP leader Lorraine Michael early Monday morning, followed by Hassan Yussuff, Secretary Treasurer of the Canadian Labour Congress

Delegates will hear from CUPE National President Paul Moist on Monday afternoon and on Tuesday morning members will hear from both Lana Payne, President of the NL Federation of Labour, and from CUPE’s newly-elected National Secretary Treasurer, Charles Fleury, who will deliver the union’s financial statement. 
 
Lucas says he expects quite a robust three days of debate with elections to be held on Wednesday morning.  Lucas himself will be re-offering for his 12th term in office.
