ST. JOHNS Wayne Lucas, President of CUPE NL says due to the certainty of the largest public sector strike in our provinces history, the Executive Board has little choice but to postpone our 30th Anniversary Year Convention and celebrations.

Faced with the threat of wage freezes, concessions and an attack on public sector pensions, the 3 500 members covering 16 different Locals are preparing for a confrontation with the new Danny Williams PC Government. Lucas says his Union wants to avoid a strike if at all possible, but his membership refuses to be the scapegoat for the fiscal mismanagement of successive governments.

Yesterday CUPE concluded their 38 strike votes in the province averaging an overwhelming 90% mandate.

This is indeed the greatest threat to unionized workers, their families & communities, this union has ever faced, Lucas concluded.
