National President Paul Moist, on behalf of the over 600,000 members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, is offering his deepest and most sincere condolences to the family of Jack Layton.

The leader of the Federal New Democratic Party died today from cancer. He was 61.

Words can hardly describe the sadness we are feeling today. We have lost a brother, an inspirational leader, and a truly great Canadian. His years of dedicated service have left a legacy that will live on for generations. He will be missed,” said Moist. “The thoughts and prayers of all CUPE members, and all Canadians, are with Olivia and his family.”

“Jack Layton brought the NDP to its best result ever in the May election. For me, he was a personal friend and our Federal Party’s greatest leader,” added Moist.
