Members of CUPE Local 40 raised $3000 to send one of their own to tsunami-ravaged Sumatra to look for his family.

Sujiharto Usman, a custodian at Calgary Board of Education, fears he may have lost his parents as well as brothers and sisters.

Usman wants to find orphaned nieces and nephews, adopt them and bring them back to Canada.

The local is also helping Usman sort out his travel papers for the emergency trip.

“We figure Sugi should be able to go by the end of the week,” said local president Drake Hammill. “We’ve got a strong membership and we donate to a lot of causes, and they said this is our own member, so they went to bat for him.”
