On the eve of an Ontario election that will focus on the Conservative government’s destructive plans for privatization, hundreds of CUPE members from across Canada will gather in Toronto to strategize about how to defend and protect public services. The “New Ways of Winning” conference starts Thursday night, with a rousing speech by CUPE National President Judy Darcy. Darcy’s address is sure to prove why the Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships calls CUPE the #1 obstacle to privatization.

After Judy Darcy’s speech energizes CUPE members, another Judy will put privatization on trial. Friday morning, political activist Judy Rebick will preside over a Peoples’ Court, complete with real lawyers and witnesses, hearing evidence on the strengths of public services and the horrors of privatization. The conference continues until Sunday morning, when prominent anti-privatization fighter Alexander Lopez Maya, from Colombia, will give CUPE members a global perspective. Lopez, a member of the Colombian legislature and a former union leader, has played a pivotal role in defence of the public utility in Cali.

The media is welcome to attend all three of these events. Here are the details:
