HALIFAX – In honour of Mi’kmaq History Month, the union representing more than 800  Educational Support Staff with the Halifax Regional School Board (HRSB) would like to acknowledge the contributions of Mi’kmaq/Aboriginal student support workers at the Board.

CUPE National Representative Marianne Welsh says, “Local 5047 would like to commend these employees for the challenging and important work they do with aboriginal students.

One needs only to look to our province’s troubled history with residential schools, to understand that our Mi’kmaq/Aboriginal student support workers’ relationships with students, parents and the broader aboriginal community is key to their success.”

Says Welsh, “Our union looks forward to working with the Board’s appointed Mi’kmaq representative as well as the newly-elected and returning members of the HRSB to nurture and substantially expand our commitment to aboriginal students.”
