VANCOUVER – The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Locals 15 and 391, representing municipal inside workers and library workers, and the Vancouver School Board (VSB) have worked together to ensure that all city schools will open as usual on Tuesday.

Five of our schools have community centres and public libraries attached to them and we were concerned that the municipal strike had the potential to result in CUPE pickets at those schools, impeding normal school opening,” said Ken Denike, Chair of the VSB. “We are very pleased with the prompt and responsible reaction by CUPE to resolve our concerns.”

We did not want to cause parents and students any unnecessary anxiety,” said Graeme Moore, Staff Representative for CUPE Local 15.  “It is important to our members, many of whom have school-age children themselves, to ensure that all students have a successful start to the school year.”

The two parties met at the Labour Relations Board this morning to discuss the VSB’s concerns, resulting in today’s agreement.
