Halifax CUPE Local 5050, representing some 1,400 school board workers with the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board (CBVRSB), has commenced bargaining for a new contract.

Local 5050 represents Teaching Assistants, secretary clerks, cleaners, custodians, mechanics and other school board employees.

CUPE National Representative Kathy MacLeod says, The issues in this round of bargaining will be wages and benefits, and a push by all CUPE locals across the province to streamline the bargaining process through provincial bargaining.

In addition, says MacLeod, the union has granted its approval for the use of summer students, so that should not be a concern now.

CUPE met with the Board on May 18, with more dates to be selected.

Says MacLeod, Were looking forward to a productive round of bargaining with the Cape Breton-Victoria Board.
