CUPE is participating in the New Orleans People’s Summit: Our Response to NAFTA Expansion April 20-22 in New Orleans, LA.

The summit includes groups based in New Orleans, other parts of the United States, Mexico, Canada, and Quebec. About 30 organizations are hosting the event, which a media advisory says “will build collective knowledge and action to transform NAFTA and other unjust economic policies pushed by Presidents Bush and Calderón, as well as Prime Minister Harper.”

The expansion of the North American Free Trade Agreement under the Security Prosperity and Partnership (SPP) agreement will increase free trade and militarization throughout the North American continent.

Through community tours, story circles, roundtables, and workshops, the People’s Summit “will be a convergence of our communities to link the Gulf Coast struggle to the fight for the survival of communities in Mexico, Canada, Quebec, and the rest of the U.S.,” the media advisory said.

“The People’s Summit contributes to the strengthening and deepening of a multi-national grassroots movement that can effectively address the trade and security policies that affect us all - increased police harassment and militarism, erosion of civil rights, privatization and displacement of communities, forced immigration and migration, and environmental destruction.”
