More than 1,000 Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Ontario members and staff put business on hold for a couple of hours today to host a community BBQ in Windsor, host city to the union’s 47th Annual CUPE Ontario Convention and donated $10,000 to the city’s food banks.

CUPE National president Paul Moist told the crowd that communities like Windsor have been hit by the global economic downturn. “Jobs have been lost, businesses closed, communities and public services have been put under pressure,” said Moist. “And the work that the Windsor food banks undertake helps families and communities weather the storm.”

Moist and CUPE Ontario president Fred Hahn were joined on the outdoor platform by June Muir, Chair of the Windsor and Essex County Food Bank Association.

In recognition of your important role in this community,” Moist told June Muir, “We are pleased to make a commitment from CUPE National for $10,000 to support your efforts.”
