ESPANOLA Mediated contract talks between CUPE Local 4360 and the Town of Espanola have been scheduled for April 24, with a strike deadline of April 29 (12:01 a.m.) now established by the Ministry of Labour.

The two sides are trying to negotiate a new contract for 29 unionized employees at the Espanola Recreation Complex, who work in the rinks, pool and rest of the facility.

CUPE is seeking a first contract on behalf of the workers, who make significantly lower wages than other town employees. The main outstanding issue is wages. The employer actually has a wage concession on the table for one category.

Bargaining began in September, 2000. A March 22nd strike vote resulted in an 84% result.
