CUPE is fighting for school board casual employees in Nova Scotia. It has asked the provinces Labour Relations Board to make 84 casual workers of the Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board regular, part-time employees.

Some of the casual employees have been working for the board, or its predecessors for 13 years with none of the contractual rights of a regular employee, said Barb Kawolski, a CUPE National Representative. “Statutory holidays are gone, overtime is gone, all the things they should be getting even if they werent in a union are no longer accessible to them, she said. “They are like a lost group.
