CUPE National leaders have written to the president of Indonesia to protest the dismissal and suspension without pay of the striking workers at Angkasa Pura 1, the privatized or state-owned airport traffic service and airport company.

“We vigourously condemn the union-busting tactics, intimidation and harassment of workers and union activists by a management that has persistently failed to honour the terms of the collective agreement,” the June 12, 2008, letter said.

The strike by members of Serikat Pekerja PT, a Public Services International affiliate, came after management repeatedly reneged on the collective agreement, hiding behind the pretext of ‘shareholders’ decisions’. It also ignores the interests of the wider public in ensuring a quality, reliable service, based on the fair treatment of the workers engaged in delivering that service.

CUPE demanded the immediate reinstatement with back pay of strikers that were allegedly “violating a disciplinary action by holding a strike and ignoring his obligations to serve the public” and those who were suspended.
