Major human rights gains for our Trans members over the past year gives us much to celebrate. Gender identity and gender expression were included as prohibited grounds of discrimination in human rights legislation in Manitoba, Ontario, and Nova Scotia. At the federal level, similar legislation passed the House of Commons and is currently being debated in the Senate.

CUPE is urging the Senate to pass this crucial piece of human rights legislation now.

Through our Pink Triangle Committee and other activists, working with coalition partners, CUPE has helped make strides for LGBTTI rights in Canada and internationally.

CUPE has:

  • Run a campaign, Speak out! Stop bullying, to fight discrimination and violence against LGBTTI workers.

  • Supported efforts to ensure that gender identity and gender expression are protected in human rights legislation across the country.

  • Supported Egale’s Safe Schools campaign and international activism.

  • Together with allies, fought for coverage of health care, leave and other basic rights for trans workers.

During Pride season, we celebrate our gains and recommit to fighting homophobia and transphobia in our workplaces and our communities.
