CUPE activists to gather in North Bay for regional conference

NORTH BAY, ON – Local union presidents and Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) activists from across Northern Ontario will gather in North Bay, from September 29 to October 1, 2010, for the Northern Ontario CUPE Conference.

The theme of the conference is “Unifying the North” and 100 delegates from all parts of the north will share ideas, learn from each other and hear from national and local politicians.

When: Wednesday, September 29 to Friday, October 1

 

When: Best Western Hotel and Conference Centre, 700 Lakeshore Drive, North Bay, Ontario

 

The conference opens September 29, at 4:00 p.m., with featured speakers beginning at 6:00 p.m., including CUPE National president Paul Moist, speaking about the challenges facing Northern Ontario in the post-Vale strike era.

 

Other speakers include CUPE Ontario president Fred Hahn and CUPE Northern Ontario Regional vice-president Henri Giroux (who is also a candidate in the Powassan municipal election) with welcoming remarks from North Bay Mayor Vic Fedeli.

 

On October 1, there will be a panel discussion beginning at 9:00 a.m., with MP Carol Hughes, and MPP Gilles Bisson.
