CUPE Local 50 Victoria Civic Workers have been recognized for their outstanding efforts in helping the 2010 United Way campaign in Greater Victoria bring in $6.21 million to help the community. The award was presented to CUPE 50 president John Burrows.
“Our members are honoured to contribute to our community,” said Burrows. “We live, work and raise our families here.”
On January 27, the United Way held its annual Spirit Awards, which celebrate organizations, schools and businesses that make exceptional contributions to the campaign.
Over the years, city workers from CUPE 50 have donated almost one million dollars to the United Way. The amount they show on their books is $953,825.00, although records date only from 1995.
In 2010 the Local raised $91,301 through payroll deductions and another $2,409 at special events, for a total of $93,710.
Other charity and community groups that CUPE 50 supports include National Little League Baseball, several Minor sports teams, Camp Jubilee, the Stephen Lewis Foundation, Partners in the Horn of Africa, Mustard Seed Food Bank, Canadian Juvenile Diabetes Association, Child Find BC, BC/Yukon Command of the Royal Canadian Legion, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
The United Way Awards were reported in the Times Colonist, Victoria’s daily newspaper. “It’s always great to have public recognition for CUPE members who contribute to their community not only at work but after hours as well,” says Burrows.
