The board of directors at Ottawa’s Andrew Fleck child care centre has started the countdown towards a legal lockout, and the members of CUPE 2204 are looking for support.

The centre’s board is demanding take-aways like:

  • Senior, experienced employees who face a lay off would not be allowed to move into a job held by a less experienced more junior employee.
  • Pregnancy and parental leave benefits be eliminated
  • Language the union believes violates the Employment Standards Act

Union negotiators say money isn’t a major issue, but that the board won’t agree to re-open wage discussions if the centre gets increased government funding.
