CRESTON— The 13 members of CUPE 4959 who work at Creston Public Library look forward to serving the public in a healthy working environment, thanks to a first collective agreement that includes wage increases, job security provisions and a new RRSP benefit.
“This is a solid new agreement that really recognizes the concerns that our members and their local brought to the bargaining table,” said CUPE National representative Lee-Anne Halifax.
“All these library members really want is respect in their workplace, and this contract gives them that.”
The new agreement, which was reached on February 10 and ratified on February 16 (Tuesday), received “100 per cent support” from the membership, said Halifax. Under the contract, CUPE 4959 members retain all benefits, along with a new RRSP benefit of 8 per cent of gross earnings.
In addition to wage increases for all positions—most notably a raise for library assistant/technicians from $10.36 an hour to $16.50 to $19.00 an hour—the contract also includes job security provisions such as contracting out language and a seniority clause. Also, a new team leader position has been created for the bargaining unit, which the local says will make a positive difference in the working environment.
Other significant issues addressed in the new contract include harassment language and provisions for labour management and health and safety meetings, plus bereavement leave.
“With this first new collective agreement reached, the members now look forward to working with the library board and Creston Public Library to offer the best service possible,” said Halifax.
