(Corner Brook) The union representing Corner Brook municipal outside workers will hold an information picket at City Hall at noon today.

The members of CUPE Local 706 are upset with the municipalitys decision to lay off eight workers, with reports that more may be laid off this Friday.

CUPE National Representative Lynn McDougall says, We know that there are contractors working right now at six different sites around the city. This employer cannot say there is no work to be done.

Says McDougall, Contractors have worked on approximately 12 different work sites over the summer on what the city called flood damage. City workers have historically worked on those same flood damage projects so why the sudden change in practice?

(ATTENTION ASSIGNMENT/PHOTO EDITORS: The information picket will take place between 12 noon and 1:00 pm in front of Corner Brook City Hall. Laid off workers will be participating in the event.)
