CUPE members shone a bright light into the dingy corners left by ServiceMaster this past week.

Members of Local 4156, working as custodial staff with the French-language school board serving the Centre-Southwest region of Ontario, held a noon hour demonstration in Welland on Monday to protest the contracting out of cleaning jobs to the American corporation.

As a result of the contract, eight part-time and one full-time custodian have lost their jobs. Some have since been approached by ServiceMaster to work for $10 per hour when they had been making $13.

The board claims that it has no choice given provincial budget cuts. But Local president Dave Walters called this “The Big Lie.”

“All this is just trying to stick it to the workers,” Walters said.
