Biggar: The union representing striking education workers in the Biggar Public School Division will return to the bargaining table today to resume contract negotiations.

Bargaining between CUPE Local 2128 and the Division Board will resume with the help of mediator Doug Forseth from the Department of Labour. The last negotiation session was held in May.

The 46 teaching and library assistants, secretaries and caretakers have been on strike for over six months. The school employees work in the communities of Biggar, Cando, Sonningdale, Handel, Landis and three Hutterite colonies.

“We’re cautiously optimistic that we’ll be able to achieve a fair and equitable agreement so our schools and communities can return to normal before the new school year starts,” said union spokesperson Penny McCallum.

The support workers will maintain their picket lines until an agreement is reached.
