NEW GLASGOW, NS – Despite the assistance of a government-appointed conciliator, contract talks between municipal workers represented by CUPE Local 919 and the Town of Springhill have reached an impasse.

The local has been attempting to reach an agreement with the town for the last five months. The only outstanding issue remaining is the town’s insistence on setting up a two-tier system of workers’ compensation.

CUPE National Representative Kim Cail says, “We have had three meetings with a conciliator from the Department of Labour in an effort to come to an agreement. The last meeting was held on May 25, 2012.”

Cail says, “The town’s proposal is totally unacceptable to the local bargaining team. We have scheduled a meeting of the membership for June 7, 2012, at which time we will be recommending that members reject the proposal.”
