Grand Falls/Windsor, NL - A visiting labour leader from one of the most violent countries in the world in which to hold such a position will be in Newfoundland from Sunday, May 5 to Wednesday, May 8, as a guest of CUPE.

CUPE NL President Wayne Lucas says Margarita Lopez is visiting the province as part of the union’s Latin America Solidarity Project.

Says Lucas, “This courageous woman is the president of SINTRACUAVALLE, a municipal water workers’ union in a country where more than 2,000 union activists have either been killed or have vanished in recent years.

We are honoured to have her visit our province and spend some time with us at our annual convention. I know she will be an inspiration to our members.”

Says Lucas, “Protecting public water and wastewater is an issue that cuts across all borders. The working people of Colombia know this struggle all too well. Lopez’s union has been fighting to keep their water in public hands, despite corruption, death threats and more.”
