RED DEER AB - The weather outside is frightful. A proper coat is so delightful.
The recent snap of cold weather has prompted CUPE members at Red Deer College to ask staff, faculty, students and the general public to donate winter coats for the Salvation Army.
“Imagine living in Alberta without proper winter gear,” said CUPE Local 1445 President Jan Valentine, who is organizing the event. “It’s not very pleasant. A number of people in our community can’t afford proper coats. That’s where we come in.”
CUPE has set up a donation box in the front lobby of the College, located at 100 College Blvd. (56th Ave and 32nd Street). The box will be there until December 22nd. The union is also soliciting contributions from College
employees, other unions, and the general public.
“It’s our hope that people have older coats, coats their children have out grown, or coats that they buy for this occasion, so that everyone can stay warm,” said Valentine. “Given that it’s Christmas time, we hope people are
moved by the Christmas spirit to do something for their community.”
