March 13, 2000, TerraceMembers of CUPE local 2052, Coast Mountain Schools voted 96% in favour of taking a strike vote over three days of voting in Stewart, Terrace, Hazelton, Kitwanga and Kitimat.

Norrey Kendall, President of CUPE Local 2052 said, “Support staff who work for the Coast Mountain School district are distressed by the disrespect they feel from this school board.”

“This board wants support staff to pay for the promises they made and cant keep when it comes to school district amalgamation. Our members will continue to resist in the face of this disrespect and continue to aim for improved working conditions for providing services to Coast Mountain students.”

The local served 72-hours notice on Monday, March 13 and plans to join the other members of the 47-local CUPE Sectoral Bargaining Committee (SBC) in taking strike action on March 27 should that action become necessary.

Gary Johnson, CUPE national servicing representative and co-ordinator for the SBC welcomed the 32nd strike vote saying, “The solidarity being demonstrated by CUPE members around these key issues will hold fast until a fair contract is achieved for everyone.”
