(St. Johns) The union representing City of St. Johns outside workers will hold a news conference Wednesday, July 25 to outline a series of alternatives to contracting out of city services.

CUPE Local 569, which represents some 360 outside workers with the City, says recent statements by Mayor Andy Wells that he will be pushing contracting out if he gets re-elected prompted the response.

(ASSIGNMENT EDITORS: The Local 569 news conference will take place at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday July 25 at St. Johns City Hall in the Carnell Room. CUPE Local 569 President Wally Duke will be joined by CUPE Newfoundland and Labrador President Wayne Lucas.)

Local 569 has also launched a public information campaign aimed at clearing up some of the fiction around contracting out and privatization of public services. Billboards have sprung up across the city with the campaign slogan, City Workers We can do the job! CUPE will also be running newspaper and radio ads in the days and weeks ahead.
