Lobbying and working behind the scenes to warn municipal councillors of the dangers of contracting-out has paid off for members of Local 109, Kingston municipal workers. Council voted on September 5th to have our members carry out maintenance operations at a new multiplex arena, currently under construction.

This is a victory for public services and for our members,” said John Hale, CUPE 109 president. “Above all, it’s a victory for Kingston residents, who will continue to benefit from our members’ dedication and service.”

Council was considering three options for maintenance of the new facility, including privatizing or contracting-out operations and management. The vote to have CUPE members keep the work was 12 to 1, after staff recommended keeping operations in house.
